Proparacaine Eye Drops

grecaine

Details

Grecaine is a local anaesthetic for Proparacaine Eye Drops. It consists of active proparacaine Hydrochloride 5mg with glycerine acting as a stabilizer. Hydrochloric acid/Sodium Hydroxide may be added to adjust pH from 3.5 to 6.0. Its action is rapid as the onset of anaesthesia begins within 30 seconds of the process and it can last up to 15-20 minutes.

The main site of action of Proparacaine HCL Ophthalmic Solution Eye Drops is the nerve cell membrane as it helps in the increase of sodium ions that are normally produced by a slight depolarization of the membrane. Proparacaine eye drops are used to numb the eye and surrounding area before certain procedures.

It can be treated as topical or local anaesthesia as it functions for certain ophthalmic operations such as the removal of foreign bodies and certain junctions from the cornea; also it works as topical anaesthesia before surgical operations such as cataract extraction.

This preparation is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any component of the solution. Proparacaine HCL Solution Eye Drops are not used for injections as it is only used for topical ophthalmic use only and also prolonged use of this anaesthetic may produce permanent corneal opacification with accompanying loss of vision.
